For the group Totes and Tails, taking part in Stage 1 of the KEY+ Challenge became an opportunity to turn creativity, teamwork and compassion into something that could make a real difference.
The group first became involved with KEY+ as part of their course at Roots, but what started as a programme activity quickly developed into a project they felt passionate about.
When deciding what to focus on, the group found inspiration as “one of our classmates knew the Hope Animal Rescue and how much they needed help… we decided to help them out as we all like animals.”
Together, the group decided to create and sell their own products to raise money for the rescue centre. Creating their own designs, they produced tote bags, keyrings and stickers to sell to students and staff with all profits going towards supporting animals at Hope Animal Rescue.
Throughout the project, the group took ownership of every stage of the process – from creating designs and budgeting to promoting and selling their products. One of the highlights for the group was building the confidence to approach others and talk about their project: “Being able to be cheeky and confident when asking other students and staff to donate.”
Seeing the impact of their hard work also gave the group a huge sense of achievement. They were proud of raising £232 (plus gift aid) for the shelter.
Through the experience, the group developed a range of important skills that they feel will support them in the future. They explained “we are more confident and feel able to communicate better. We also learned about budgeting and working as a team.”
The young people also shared that the experience will have a positive impact on their futures: “We’re really proud that we have accomplished something that will help animals who need it. We will also be able to put this on our CVs.”
Overall, the group discovered that stepping outside of their comfort zone could lead to personal growth, confidence and a sense of pride in what they were capable of achieving together.
Looking back on the experience, their advice to other young people considering doing KEY+ was honest and encouraging: “Its definitely worth it! It might be a bit annoying and stressful at the start but once you’ve done it you feel like you’ve achieved something.”
The group also wanted to recognise the support they received throughout the project, sharing: “We wouldn’t have got through this without our tutor Bex. She helped us out a lot, she worked really hard to put our hand drawn designs into digital so that we could print them and transfer it over. We really appreciate all of her help!”
Through KEY+, Totes and Tails were able to take an idea, develop it into a real project, and use their creativity to support a cause they care about whilst building confidence, teamwork and communication skills along the way.
