Student Volunteering Week is here and at The Key, we’re celebrating the incredible contributions of student volunteers who help empower young people to believe in themselves and achieve their potential.

We know that balancing studies, part-time jobs, and social commitments can be a challenge, which is why our volunteering opportunities are flexible, rewarding, and designed to fit around student life. Whether you’re looking to boost your CV, gain valuable experience, or give back to your community, volunteering with The Key is a brilliant way to develop key skills while making a real difference.

The Key have spoke to Dhruv, one of our fantastic student volunteers, about their experience with The Key and what he’s gained from his time with us.

Q&A with Dhruv, one of our student volunteers:

“I started volunteering for The Key in the Autumn of 2022, alongside my second-year studies at Newcastle University.”

“My most memorable moments would be from volunteering at a youth community centre around Christmas time, and seeing the passion and joy these young people had for their projects. It was truly a privilege to have a role (albeit small) in contributing in their sense of pride and accomplishment in achieving the next stage of their challenge.”

"The most rewarding part of the volunteering is feeling like I am contributing something meaningful and tangible to young people’s lives. It is also incredibly rewarding to see the young people reach the next stages, and pitch with greater confidence and sense of authority.”

I believe that other students should volunteer with The Key because it will involve working with a team of genuinely lovely people who all care about what they are doing and want you to succeed. It will also involve applying yourself to new situations, and areas of life that may sometimes be uncomfortable and alien but are nevertheless incredibly valuable for becoming someone who is interested in the wider community, and in developing their own skills in relation to this.”

“The fact is, is that there are many gaps in the university timetable, that allow you to commit a few hours to focusing on the volunteering work. In case of a clash between a lecture or seminar, and a volunteering obligation, I have chosen to volunteer, because the former is much easier to catch up on. Every time I have volunteered it has been a unique experience that I would not want to miss out on.”

Dhruv’s experience shows just how valuable and rewarding student volunteering can be.
