The Key receives anniversary visit from the Duke and Duchess

In 2011, The Key was lucky enough to be chosen as 1 of 26 charities to benefit from The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s Royal Wedding Charitable Gift Fund. On Tuesday the 27th of April, we were thrilled to host a return visit, to celebrate not only their 10th anniversary but also for The Duke and Duchess to see The Key’s work in action.  

During the visit, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge met staff from The Key and Cheesy Waffles, a charity based in Durham which is of The Key’s Delivery Partners, and most importantly, some of the young people we all support. They met a group of young people whose project is currently going through The Key Framework before participating in some youth group activities. 

The Key’s CEO Richard Haigh said, “First and foremost, everyone at The Key would like to wish The Duke and Duchess a very happy tenth anniversary! 

The Key still feels so privileged to have been chosen as one of the charities to benefit from the Royal Wedding Charitable Gift Fund. It was a real honour to meet The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Their passion for charity work was clear for all to see and we’re grateful for their interest. You could tell it meant a great deal to the young people that they were there.  

It was also great to meet the Cheesy Waffles Project and learn just how much they’ve achieved thanks to The Key and those who support us. The Key Frameworks provides an outlet for young people to lead their own engagement, reconnect, build friendships, and positively contribute to their community. These activities are even more important now, given the challenges we’ve all faced. The Cheesy Waffles are an excellent example of an organisation that puts young people first and supports them to be the best version of themselves. We’re proud to call them a partner.” 

In total, the Royal Wedding Charitable Gift Fund raised over £1m thanks to the generosity and kindness shown by all those who made donations, helping to support several fantastic charities. Funds received by The Key were used to empower hundreds of young people to deliver meaningful projects on their terms and enabled them to make a difference in their communities. 

Our work is funded entirely through generous donations from trusts and individuals. To continue supporting young people in the way we do, we need to generate additional funding from like-minded people who want to elevate young people as much as we do.
