Through KEY+, Mermaid for Each Other turned their shared interests into Anime Attacks – an inclusive, beach-themed convention designed to bring people of all ages and abilities together.
Running from 11am to 4pm, the event featured creative activities, performances, quizzes, a cosplay competition and local stallholders selling K-pop and anime-inspired merchandise and artwork. Visitors could decorate sunglasses, mirrors and mini surfboards, enjoy crafts in the Sunlit Suite, take photos in the Coral Cove and grab treats, mocktails and sandwiches from the Sandy Sips Café.
The Beach Bop stage hosted three performances, two quizzes, coastal bingo, an opening ceremony and a cosplay competition, giving visitors plenty of opportunities to get involved throughout the day.
The group wanted to create an event where everyone could take part. As Robin explained: “We came together to form a convention that could be inclusive to all ages and abilities. That leaves no one out. We chose a beach theme because its summer and everyone loves summer!”
The group’s shared passion for anime, K-pop and conventions gave them a strong starting point, while KEY+ gave them the opportunity to turn their ideas into a real event.
The group initially wanted to take part in the KEY+ Challenge because they wanted to try something new, build confidence and make their convention dream a reality. Robin said: “Doing a KEY+ Challenge sounded like it would be good for me to get out there and try something new that would push me.”
They worked together to develop their ideas, research options and make decisions. Harley explained: “We all suggested our own ideas and then came together to decide which we liked most or voted if we couldn’t decide.”
The planning process involved organising activities, preparing documents, sourcing supplies and making sure the event could be as inclusive as possible. The group also had to adapt when some of the supplies they ordered failed to arrive. Harley said: “Some of the supplies we wanted for the event didn’t arrive, so we had to find a way around replacing/sourcing them last minute.”
Although there were challenges, the group’s hard work paid off. Harley enjoyed seeing the plans come together, saying, “I was most proud on the day of the event watching all of our planning come together and becoming an actual event.”
The experience helped each member develop new skills and grow in confidence. Robin reflected, “I feel like I have grown as a person, I am able to approach people out in public.”
Harley also noticed a change in their confidence and communication skills: “I feel more confident in my ideas and abilities, as well as more confident speaking in front of crowds.”
For Elias, the experience was a confidence boost and an opportunity to practice talking to new people and making decisions. They were also proud of being able to support others throughout the project.
The group’s progress shows how KEY+ gives young people the space to try something new, take responsibility and discover what they can achieve. Robin said: “I feel I am more capable than I thought I could be and that I can make a difference in my life.”
Looking ahead, Elias is keen to continue creating conventions, while Harley hopes to use their improved digital and administration skills to create more opportunities in the future.
The groups advice to other young people thinking about taking part in KEY+ is simple, Harley said: “To give it a shot! Seeing something you’ve planned come together is so exciting and very worth it.”
Elias summed it up with: “Do your best! I think its worth trying to boost confidence.”
