KEY+ Group: Underdogs
For the transitions group known as the Underdogs, Stage 1 of the KEY+ Challenge was more than just a day out – it was a step toward independence, connection, and confidence.
Their plan was simple: have fun. And they certainly did. The group spent the day bowling, playing arcade games, and dining out at Sambuca’s, a trip that offered both excitement and something more as the group described it as “something we wouldn’t be able to do in school.”
From the start, young people took the lead. They managed bookings, worked out timing, and made decisions together – whether it was what to do first or who would bowl in what order. Compared to a regular school trip, this one had “more freedom to do what you want.” That sense of ownership set the tone for a day of laughter, learning and growth.
There were a few hiccups such as booking the bowling and even just thinking of a group name but there was nothing that the team couldn’t work through. Problem-solving and communication came naturally as the group collaborated on everything from ordering food to choosing prizes from B&M.
Talking about their experience, the facilitator noticed that “Robbie and Austin work well together” as their teamwork stood out throughout the day. Kiarrah also enjoyed the claw machine and Phoebe won the jackpot (825 tickets!) – everyone had a moment that made the day special.
There was space for new connections too as Robbie and George became friends through this project, despite not getting along before and Kiarrah started talking to new people that she had never met before. The group shared laughs at B&M and looked out for one another as the facilitator shared, “Austin didn’t really know Kiarrah but still made sure they were doing things that she also wanted to do.” The care and consideration made a difference as the group spoke about enjoying making friends through the KEY+ Challenge.
When asking the group how taking part in KEY+ helped them, Austin said: “I struggle with resilience, so I enjoyed working in a small group” and Robbie said, “It has helped me improve my confidence […and] it has helped me to think about others.”
Would they recommend it? Yes. Would they do it again? Yes – because they had “so much fun”!
Through a mix of arcades, pizza, prizes and personal growth, the Underdogs discovered the power of friendship, teamwork, and what happens when young people are given the freedom to lead.
