Boys R Us - Winter Extravaganza

Three young boys from South Durham joined forces for their Stage 3 Key Project to put on a winter extravaganza for local community members.

After making friends at School, Corrie, Riley and Tyler, aged 14, decided to begin their Key adventure to learn new skills and experience new things together.

Many years ago the local council used to host a Santa’s grotto event for the local Ferryhill community but after cuts to provision led to the closure of the local youth club, the festive events ceased to exist. After searching online for similar local events, the group soon realised there was still a lack of festive community events for the Ferryhill area. Boys R Us decided to change the game and put on their own to remember for their Stage 3 Key Project.

Once their idea was set, the group got planning. They sourced venue and entertainment quotes and tried to secure a top price. After much negotiation, The group managed to secure a free space and were then able to focus the rest of their budget on the entertainment, refreshment and decoration element of their winter extravaganza. They found a face painter, identified a dress up Elsa performer and made the important decisions on how they’d like to decorate their own grotto! So with their planning and thinking, the group headed to panel…

Boys R Us got creative for their panel performance by presenting their idea with a 12 Key Skills of Christmas song and showing their skills development by wrapping up a present to represent each skill and then asking panel members to unwrap them so they could discuss each one. The panel were extremely impressed with everything the group had achieved so far and were more than happy to give them to go ahead to do their project.

So with their new found confidence and a yes from panel, Boy R Us got started with their Stage 3 Key Project. Corrie, Riley and Tyler booked their entertainment and began advertising their event. They invited children, families and individuals of all ages to come along for some festive fun.

On the day lots of people turned up and enjoyed all of the hard work Boys R Us put into the event. The group even managed to invite the Mayor to come along and get dressed up as part of the festivities…

Their Key Facilitator, Laura said that after completing their Stage 3 Key Project “all boys feel they can express themselves more clearly now. Their project has pushed them out of their comfort zone and has helped them to build new friendships with people they would never normally speak to in school.”

Well done to Boys R Us for completing an incredibly unique and fun Key Project. We can’t wait to see what they come up with next!
