Brightening up Durham Train Station!

Here at The Key we were thrilled to work on an exciting project with LNER recently who have supported our work since 2022.

With the opportunity to revamp one of Durham Train Station's waiting room, LNER called on The Key to get young people to take the lead and make the space their own.

We called upon Cheesy Waffles Project who snapped at the opportunity to get involved in creating a memorial mural to lift the space and show everyone visiting how amazing Durham truly is.

The young people involved made the project their own. Looking into local history, they chose their favourite parts of Durham and its history and with some keen railway fans amongst the group involved, they even chose their favourite trains that have run through the city over time.

Cheesy Waffles used recycled materials, fabrics and drew many of the components of the mural before our friends at LNER blew their finished artwork up and get it permanently fixed in place.

It looks absolutely phenomenal and everyone at the Station and LNER were blown away by the end result. We'd like to say a massive thank you to Cheesy Waffles and all young people involved. Here's some photos of the opening of the mural. We hope you get to check it out in Waiting Room 2 at Durham Train Station soon...

“I liked looking at the different images for County Durham and deciding what should go on our mural. It was good that we all worked together on it and helped to make it. I'm looking forward to everyone seeing it at Durham Station and being able to show other people what we have done.”

- Evan Jones, 20, who helped to create the train station mural

“The Key were honoured that LNER chose our charity to support the station art project. It's been great to work with Cheesy Waffles Project to empower local young people to make a local space their own. We loved seeing the mural come to life and know it will be appreciated for years to come by visitors of the station too.”
